Art
At St. Michael's, Art is taught in line with the National Curriculum and is designed to inspire creativity, curiosity and confidence in every child. We believe that all children are artists, and we provide opportunities for them to explore, experiment and develop their own ideas in a supportive and engaging environment. Our child-led approach encourages pupils to make creative choices, solve problems independently and express themselves through their artwork. Children are given the freedom to respond to themes and stimuli in their own unique ways, helping them to build confidence in their artistic voice.
Throughout their time in school, children work with a vast array of materials, tools and techniques. This includes paint, clay, textiles, collage, printing materials and digital media, as well as natural resources such as leaves, twigs, stones and flowers to inspire and create artwork. Pupils experience a wide range of both 2D and 3D art, allowing them to explore drawing, painting, sculpture, construction and design. Each child uses a sketchbook that follows them through the year group, providing a personal space to record ideas, practise techniques, reflect on learning and celebrate progress. These sketchbooks show each child’s creative journey and the development of their skills over time.
